Man Convicted of Rape in East London Sentenced in Absentia, Police Seek Public’s Help
Detectives in east London are on the hunt for William White, 24, who was recently sentenced in his absence for a shocking crime. White, of Paragon Road, Hackney, was handed a five-and-a-half-year prison sentence at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Tuesday, August 1. He was found guilty of one count of rape and one count of sexual assault by touching following a nine-day trial that concluded on Friday, May 19.
White’s absence during the sentencing has made him a wanted man, and police are urging the public to provide any information that might lead to his arrest. Upon conviction, White will be placed on the Sex Offender Register for life and will be closely monitored by specialised officers upon release from prison.
Detective Constable Jamie Merrill, the investigating officer, expressed the severity of White’s actions, describing the horrifying ordeal the victim endured while asleep and vulnerable. White attempted to mislead the court about his actions during the trial, but the jury unanimously convicted him of rape.
The incident occurred on January 17, 2020, when the victim attended White’s Hackney address for a social gathering along with a friend. She trusted White, having known him through mutual acquaintances. However, the night took a horrifying turn as she fell asleep at his residence and woke to find herself being raped. She promptly reported the incident to the police on January 19, 2020.
Following her report, detectives swiftly arrested White two days later, initiating an extensive investigation across London and the south-east. He was formally charged with the offense on December 20, 2021.
Despite the emotional and challenging circumstances, the victim-survivor bravely attended court and provided essential evidence that led to White’s conviction. Detective Constable Merrill expressed hope that the sentence would bring some measure of peace to the victim and the sense that justice has been served.
PC Rita Stepanoviene, a specialist officer who supported the victim-survivor throughout the case, commended her and her friend for their courage in coming forward and providing crucial evidence that protected others from potential harm by White. The police authorities stressed their commitment to taking reports of sexual offences seriously and urged any potential victims to come forward and speak to them, ensuring they receive the necessary support.
Anyone who believes they might have been a victim of a sexual offence is encouraged to contact the police on 101 or report the offence online. Furthermore, anyone with information about the whereabouts of William White should call 101 or reach out to @MetCC on Twitter. For those who wish to remain anonymous, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
